Becoming More Skilled at Talking about Qualities of Good Writing
As a writing lab professional learning community, we decided one of our foci should be on conferring because it enables us to differentiate our one-on-one and small group instruction to meet diverse student learning needs. After attending Columbia University's Writing Institute, we received mentoring on how to work with individual students to strategically target our instruction. Attached is a sample of some the questioning strategies we are "trying on" as we address the needs of the authors in our classrooms.
Checklist for Angela Johnson
Creating effective charts and placing them strategically throughout the classroom can serve as a learning resource for students and become an extension of our teaching. This is a sample checklist for Angela Johnson mentor text.
Differentiating Instruction for Conversational Text
As our Writing Lab examines how to strengthen the reading-writing connection, we realize that our students need to revisit familiar text and read it like a writer would. What do you notice about the author's intentional craft moves, and how can you add this to your repertoire of writing strategies? Based on the the word of Katie Wood Raye, Lester Laminack and others, we developed this chart which articulates how the craft of conversational text progresses throughout the grade levels.
Generating Strategies
This is a compilation of the generating strategies for opening the Writers Notebook that was shared at the August 2010 Writing Institute. Its purpose is to encourage students to find ideas to write about without prompting.
