Improving Science Literacy Skills of At-Risk Students by Integrating Research-Proven Strategies with a Focus on Teacher Effectiveness in the Science Classroom
Project-based learning not only involves time in the classroom, it emphasizes a wide range of skills that students need in order to become successful professionals and citizens of the 21st Century. Keeping this in mind, we developed a team goal that has shaped our work under the TIIP grant. Our vision statement is that John Muir High School students will be able to apply tools to solve problems, justify solutions, and use academic language while developing conceptual understanding of science. Through this vision, we hope our students will wonder about the intricacies and complexities about the world. In addition, our team of teachers are mentors for our students who we hope will develop the intrigue and passion for the sciences.
Through these collaborations, our teams' content and pedagogy to meet the needs of at-risk students certainly increased. We have developed a great deal of expertise on teacher collaboration to reach and support all students and hope to share our learning with other teachers throughout our district and the Los Angeles Basin.
School Information
John Muir High School is one of five high schools located at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains in the Pasadena Unified School District. Muir serves approximately 1,100 students who come from a variety cultures, socioeconomic groups, and academic profiles. Teachers at the school engage students in curriculum by offering core academic courses, career technical education, and an array of electives that focus on providing students the knowledge and skills to prepare them for success in college and career.
