Miles Avenue - Developing the Writer Portfolio Page

— filed under:

Developing the Writer works to improve teacher reading and writing practices, thus raising student achievement.

Introduction

Established from the belief that all students should receive equal access to the same quality instruction, Miles formed a writing lab professional learning community (PLC) to investigate and implement research-based, best instructional practices in reading and writing. The team works collaboratively to refine writing instruction on how to use mentor text to teach writer's craft and to make explicit the reading and writing connection. The writing labs serve as an observation and modeling venue for the staff, through the incorporation of cognitive coaching tools and other additional support to allow the PLC to bring these effective strategies to a school-wide, systemic level. In this process, we will create genre specific Conferring Toolkits, implement Lesson Study practices, and examine student work through a systematic process to impact student learning. It is our belief that just like all students can learn, all teachers can teach and that the quality of instruction a student receives should be a guarantee no matter what classroom they may be in.
