INTRODUCTION
Camino Nuevo High School believes that relevant standards based projects engage students and improve their readiness for college. Our project team intentionally represents across the disciplines to dynamically integrate project based learning with standards based curriculum. Our portfolio highlights include:
- Lessons learned throughout our inquiry.
- Best practices to increase student achievement and engagement in standards-aligned PBLs.
We also include many useful resources for 21st century skills, assessment and grading, building academic vocabulary, differentiated instruction, English language learners, inclusion and special education, integrated curriculum, and other significant areas to support project planning and student achievement.
PROGRAM HISTORY, DEMOGRAPHICS, & ACADEMIC SUCCESS
- The Camino Nuevo High School team has had multiple opportunities made possible because of the UCLA TIIP grant. Our team presentation (Parts 1 & 2) at the 2012 California Charter Schools Conference is the culmination of our research over the past few years.
- Camino Nuevo Charter High School, based in Los Angeles, is a college preparatory school that serves the unique needs of an urban demographic. Our students continue to excel in spite of a majority of our population designated as low income and English language learners.
LESSONS LEARNED IN IMPLEMENTING PROJECT-BASED LEARNING WITH STANDARDS-BASED INSTRUCTIONGiven the demands of supporting our urban demographic, effectively integrating project based learning with standards based curriculum has been an eventful work in progress! Lessons are highlighted to give context for what we do to support our learners. Included is a case study of a former "hot mess" PBL effectively aligning with standards over time. |
SO…WHAT DO WE DO TO SUPPORT OUR LEARNERS?Frankly, the key to effective project-based learning with standards-based instruction is implementing enhanced discovery learning (as well as a few other elements).
