Grade 12: Developing Counterstories of Resistance and Resilience

Below are the outcomes of one unit I created with the support of my TIIP team. Collaboration was key as I explored new ways of organizing curriculum and instruction that engaged students in a critical multiliteracies pedagogy.

Community Cultural Wealth Project

I wanted to develop a curriculum that used counter-narrative storytelling and Tarro Yosso's theory of community cultural wealth both as a pedagogical tool and to engage students in critical inquiry. The unit was framed around the following essential questions:

  • What are different ways people respond to historical and generational trauma?
  • How do people in our communities resist oppression and injustice?
  • Why is it important that we tell the stories of people in our community?

Disrupting Deficit Thinking

Below is a brainstorm of student thinking at the start of our Counterstorytelling unit. What is reflected is the extent to which students have internalized deficit thinking about their community. Counterstories can work to disrupt this thinking and reframe the community in such as way that students begin to see the assets they possess.

Brainstorm of Student Perceptions of Watts

Student Projects

Below is a student project produced after developing research questions, conducting interviews, and developing a narrative that synthesized themes from their research. Projects were presented to the community at an exhibition last Spring.

Engaging Multiple Literacies: A Student Reflection

Below is a student reflecting on the literacy practices she engaged in throughout the project and how this approach to literacy instruction differs from traditional English education.
