UCLA TIIP Team Professional Development Activities
As a part of our journey we started with a tour of the JPL facility in Pasadena, spent a few days in Houston visiting Johnson Space Center with the highest level tour, called Level 9 which included having lunch with an Astronaut. During that exclusive lunch with only our team, we interviewed David Hilmer.
JPL
The NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory has an annual Open House which invites visitors to share in the wonders of space through high definition and 3-D videos, live demonstrations and interactions with scientists and engineers. The team was able to attend this tour.

Level 9 Tour
The Level Nine Tour at the Space Center in Houston took us behind the scenes to see the real world of NASA up close and personal. The tour takes about five hours which included lunch in the astronauts' cafeteria. We had a very knowledgeable tour guide, a pilot himself, and the sister of an astronaut that guided our tour. We were able to see the original and current Mission Control centers. The team actually got to see where the astronauts train while they were in training. The tour allowed us to see the behind the secret closed doors of astronauts. It included Building 3, Building 9NE-Space Vehicle Mock-up facility (Observation Catwalk); Building 30S- New mission Control Center (viewing Area); Building 30N-Historic Mission Control Center; Sonny Carter Training Facility-Newtral Buoyancy Lab.

Lunch with an Astronaut-David Hilmers
The day after our Level 9 Tour, we were able to return for a private lunch with an astronaut. We were very fortunate that we were the only ones to sign up for the lunch that day. We had David Hilmers to ourselves. We were able to videotape our interview with him.
Columbia Memorial Space Center - NASA
NASA has educational opportunities in offers at various locations. The TIIP team attended a professional development on a Saturday on Rocketry at the Columbia Memorial Space Center. We were able to do hands-on activities and received free materials to take back to our school site.
Red Tails-Tuskegee Airman
The UCLA TIIP Team~Windsor Hills and our principal Ms. Kathy Crowe, had the opportunity to attend the private screening of "Red Tails!" So much information was garnish from viewing the movie. We would be remiss if we did not mention Mr. Charles Johnson who produced the film and invited us to view the movie. Thank you Mr. Johnson.
NSTA National Conference in Indianapolis
Each year the National Science Teachers Association which is the largest science teachers organization in the nation, holds four conferences on science education; 3 regional events in the fall and a national conference in the spring. The TIIP team made it first ever national attendance and was overwhelmed with the resources, trainings, and vendors involved with this conference.
