Bellflower Unified School District - Conceptualizing Math

INTRODUCTION

Our team trained with Guillermo Mendieta's program called Pictorial Math. In our second year with TIIP, we shared our lesson plans and experience with related school-site teachers. Our goal was to share best practices, teaching children math using visual and hands-on activities.

Pictorial Math Team Members

Stacey Williams has been in education for 14 years. She has taught mathematics in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. In addition, she worked as a math instructional coach for 4 years where she coached other teachers, wrote conceptual lesson plans, and presented demonstration lessons in kindergarten through 8th grade classrooms. Tia Ewing has been a part of the Bellflower Unified School District Team for 16 years. She has taught multiple subjects K-6 and is currently teaching in a multi-aged classroom, grades 3-6. Tewing@busd.k12.ca.us

Sean Monroe has been in education for over 10 years. He has taught mathematics to students in grades K through 12. Sean has spent several years helping teachers teach mathematics conceptually to their students. Sean has also spent many years teaching Spanish in the high school. Smonroe@busd.k12.ca.us

Maryn Kaczorowski has been teaching secondary math since 1998 at Mayfair Middle/High School. Her current area of expertise is teaching students in the range from Far Below Basic to Basic based on the CA 7th Grade Content Standards and CA Algebra Readiness. She currently teaches Math Support & Enrichment, a math elective, to the 7th and 8th graders using Pictorial Mathematics and 8th grade Algebra Readiness. mkaczorowski@busd.k12.ca.us

Katherine Shaw has been teaching at Washington Elementary in the Bellflower Unified School District. She has taught multiple subjects in the primary grades for 12 years. Currently, she is in her third year teaching 6th grade.  She works at a school where 85% of her students are second language learners. Kshaw@busd.k12.ca.us

 

SCHOOL INFORMATION

 

wildcatCraig Williams Elementary School is a public school in the Bellflower Unified School District. It serves around 750 students from kindergarten through sixth grade. It operates on a traditional calendar. Over 50% of the students attending Craig Williams are Hispanic or Latino. The second largest subgroup at the site is African American. The English Learner population is around 245 students with the majority of the students speaking Spanish as their primary language. The 2009-2010 AYP reports showed that 49.8% of English Learners and 37.6% of African American students at Craig Williams were proficient in mathematics, falling short of the 58% required.

 

Washington mascotWashington Elementary School is a public school in the Bellflower Unified School District. It serves around 880 students from kindergarten through sixth grade. It operates on a traditional calendar. Over 700 students attending Washington Elementary are of Hispanic or Latino origin. The second largest subgroup is African American students with less than 100 students attending Washington. Close to 500 English Learners attend Washington Elementary with the majority of the students speaking Spanish as their primary language. The 2009-2010 AYP reports showed that 50.6% of English Learners and 39% of African American students were proficient in mathematics, falling short of the 58% required.

 

MonsoonMayfair Middle/High School is a public school in the Bellflower Unified School District. It serves around 3,500 students from 7th grade through 12th grade. It operates on a traditional calendar. The largest subgroup of students attending Mayfair Middle/High School is Hispanic or Latino. The second largest subgroups are White, not Hispanic and African American. Close to 300 English Learners attend Mayfair Middle/High School with the majority of the students speaking Spanish as their primary language. The 2009-2010 AYP reports showed that 33% of English Learners and 33.6% of African American students were proficient in mathematics, falling short of the 54.8% required.
