School Information and Program Description

Moffett Elementary Dual Language program is a K-5 program.

School Information

Moffett Elementary School

Sitting directly underneath the flight path for flights arriving into the Los Angeles International Airport, is the Lennox School District. Cradled by the 105 freeway to the south, the city of Inglewood to the east, and the ever busy 405 freeway to the west, this unique community is just one square mile of land in an unincorporated area of Los Angeles County. Lennox schools are crucial to the vibrancy of the community, and we believe that the heart of the Lennox community is  a very special place called Moffett Elementary School. Our school is proud that it has been identified as a California Distinguished School and has been recognized for its undeniable and unwavering support of the arts. Although this public school houses no permanent art or music teacher, there’s a strong belief that the arts adds to the educational and intellectual experience of its students. This is evident by such partnerships as with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, which offers various instrumental classes for Moffett students. The belief in the arts fuels teachers to incorporate the visual and performing arts standards into many areas of the curriculum.

This urban elementary school has and continues to face many challenges such as meeting federal and state academic accountability measures, but Moffett has an undeniable drive and force that has lead to many successes. Moffett’s spirit and its long-standing philosophical belief in bilingualism and biliteracy prompted the district to bestow and honor our school by making it the official site for the district’s Dual Language (DL) Program. Moffett currently serves 801 students, 550 of whom are Dual Language students in grades K-5.

Program Description

Lennox Dual Language Logo

The Lennox School District Dual Language (DL) program at Moffett School is a simultaneous language acquisition program, where students receive 50% of their instruction in Spanish and 50% in English. The Lennox DL program has two program characteristics that may set it apart from many other DL programs. Students in the DL program have two teachers, their language models, that teach exclusively in English or Spanish. Teachers share students and work collaboratively. In addition, the language of instruction alternates on a daily basis and requires students to move between two classroom settings on alternating days, providing the students to be fully immersed in a Spanish language setting or an English language setting. This adheres to a fundamental DL premise, separation of language and separation of space.
