Preparing to teach robotics and animation in the classroom

As elementary school teachers, we had no previous experience with engineering or robotics so we had to spend some time learning ourselves.

Although we were a bit nervous in the beginning, we spent time ourselves building robots and expanding our own knowledge. We built and re-built robots. We spoke with a robotics expert at the Viterbi School of Engineering. The most difficult part for us was learning the programming piece.

Once we began the actual teaching, we were pleasantly surprised by the fact that this kind of learning was much more natural for young children. The students actually were able to teach us in the process. Allowing the students to learn and problem solve and letting go of some of the control was a very magical experience. Many of the students said that learning robotics was their favorite third grade experience.

Everyone loves building robots!
