Literacy Independence- Read to Someone

Students read with a partner by either reading the same book or two different books and in the process it provides opportunities to practice strategies, improve fluency, and check for understanding.

Students: Read the whole time; stay in one spot; read quietly, sit EEKK (Elbow to Elbow and Knee to Knee,)

  • Chart/ picture of EEKK
  • Practice Check for Understanding (I heard you read... Who and What)
  • Both read the same book - "I read, you read"
  • Each choose own book and read a page and partner checks for understanding
  • How to choose books- Rock, paper, scissors
  • How to choose a partner- Raise hand as a silent signal that you need a partner; Give eye contact with another students who has hand raised; walk to person and say; "Do you want to be my partner?"
