Student Independent Reading Level Assessment Data

This page summarizes Team Read's project findings of student Independent Reading Level Assessment data from June 2010 to June 2012.

Independent Reading Comprehension Text Gradient

Independent Reading LevelThe text gradient chart is a grade level designation for independent reading comprenhension. The chart helps determine what text features are appropriate for the student at that level, which teachers need to address in order for them to advance to the next level.

For example, a student that is reading at level K may read books independently that are appropriate for a student in the middle of second grade. At this level, the reader will begin to be exposed to longer, multisyllabic words. These books are shorter; therefore, the reader will need enough books in their reading bin or baggy to keep them engaged for the duration of the independent reading time. At this time, students will benefit from explicit instruction on chunking (breaking words apart) and also from providing time for word study each day.

***It is important to note that we use levels to assist children in their comprehension and not to label them.

Student Data Summary Chart from June 2010-June 2012

The lead team has monitored the growth of a set of students that has been involved in Reading Workshop in Iliana's and Rodette's classrooms using the Teachers College Independent Reading Level Assessments. The data reflect the students' comprehension abilities from the beginning of second grade to the end of third grade.
