Santa Monica High School (Samohi) has 3,061 students. The 2009 API score for all students was 778, but African-American and Latino students fell well below that average. Samohi was redesigned five years ago into smaller, more personalized learning communities, called houses. The five houses each have two advisors, an outreach specialist, their own principal, and an office. Students are most likely to have house-specific teachers for grades 9 and 10. Each house contains approximately 640 students and includes grades 9-12. We will use the structure of our small learning communities to track improved instruction by TIIP teachers.
Samohi’s students represent a diverse community. Approximately one-third of our student body is on free or reduced lunch. The ethnic breakdown is as follows: 9% African American, 33% Latino, 6% Asian, and 47% White, 5% other. 27% of our students are socio-economically disadvantaged. Over 200 students are English Language Learners and 9% of our students have disabilities.
