Growing as a Community

On this page, we share information about parent workshops to provide training to our community members on reading fluency, read alouds, reading discussion strategies. There are PowerPoints, handouts, and informational fliers.

Parent Workshops

Read Across AmericaOur team, in collaboration with our colleagues in our school and district, hosted a Parent Reading Night to teach families how they can support their children in the reading work they are doing at school. Workshops and the materials used were provided in English and Spanish. Childcare and snacks were provided for the parents as well.

These are the topics we covered:

  • Reading Fluency - This parent workshop will help to teach and train parents on how to support their children with Reading Fluency.  Helping Your Child With English Reading Fluency
  • Reading Aloud to Your Child
  • How to Discuss Reading with Your Child

Community ReadingWithin these workshops, three big ideas were:

  1. Emphasize the importance of reading as a life-long habit and encourage its frequent practice
  2. The importance of reading by modeling reading to your child and by sharing the contents of what you read
  3. Strategies the school is teaching to make meaning from text.  Here are the fliers in English and Spanish and the evaluation form we used.

Below is a Powerpoint presentation that was used during the workshop.
