Teacher Workshop

Weaving LGBTQ Literature into Your Curriculum

On July 11, 2012, our team hosted a workshop for twenty secondary English and Social Studies teachers to guide them through the process of integrating LGBTQ texts, authors, and issues into their curricula. The agenda appears below, and a slideshow of photos from the event can be found here. 

 

Agenda

9:00 am     Welcome & Continental Breakfast

9:15 am     Six word essays on LGBTQ prompts

9:30 am     Introduction to the UCLA WP Study Group – history, goals, and grant

9:35 am     Overview of text analysis project

9:40 am     Short writing and partner share – What’s compelling you to include LGBTQ literature or authors in your curriculum?

9:55 am      Shared inquiry on LAUSD transgender memo

10:25 am    Explore related sample units and the integration of LGBTQ texts into units

10:35 am    Anticipating questions people might have about your work with LGBTQ texts

10:45 am    Break

10:55 am    Review LGBTQ texts – choose most promising for your work

11:30 am    Break into table groups by grade level/subject/text

12:00 pm    Write to text/unit analysis questions & begin discussion

LUNCH

12:30 pm    Groups develop lesson ideas using working plan to document & plan

2:00 pm      Groups develop short presentation to share
