Conference Presentations & WorkshopsOur team was invited to present our work at CATE, With Different Eyes, and at the UCLA Writing Project Summer Invitational. This gave us the opportunity to disseminate our work and to test out various workshop approaches in preparation for our culminating Teacher Workshop in July 2012.

CATE 2012CATE 2011, SacramentoStand Up! Speak Out! Teen Writers Reflect on LGBTQ Realities
Abstract: The UCLA Writing Project Study Group on Homophobia recently sponsored a writing contest on LGBTQ issues for all teens. "What does the world need to know about LGBTQ teens?" Teenagers throughout Los Angeles responded--in a variety of genres, some with humor, others with great seriousness. Join us as we introduce writing generated by the contest, suggest classroom use, and engage in dialogue about intentionally designing opportunities for students to focus on issues rarely discussed in schools. With Different Eyes 2011, UCLAWe Can Do More: Working Towards a More Inclusive Curricula
Abstract: Winners of the Stand Up, Speak Out teen-writing contest responded to the question often ignored in classrooms: What does the world need to know about LGBTQ youth? Join us as we share these student generated responses and their uses as writing models and opportunities for significant reading, discussion and writing in the ELL classroom.
