Atlas' Standards in Practice Protocol is a structured approach to analyzing student writing to affect daily teacher practice. The Protocol first asks that the group of teachers makes observations about what they see the student doing or not doing in their writing. From this data, teachers are expected to interpret what they believe is happening in the classroom around teacher practice and student learning. After interpretations, the classroom teacher is given time to reflect on the data, the think about the interpretations they hear their fellow colleagues make, and to articulate what they perceive is taking place in terms of the teaching and learning. Finally, the group discusses the implications of thier findings and determines the next set of instructional steps. Taken from a first grade classroom, the following are three sets of student work samples that show how we utilize the Standards in Practice Protocol.
