Promoting and Recruiting for Project-Based Schools
Effective and efficient practices to promote and recruit students for projects-based high schools.
Promoting a Project-Based High School
Los Angeles Big Picture
High School has been open for six years and since its inception we have
struggled with recruiting incoming students who are open-minded, want to take an
active part in their education, and do not see their education taking place
inside a classroom. In the six years we have been open we found out that these type of students perform to their full
potential in the Big Picture Learning model, which
personalizes their education using real world center
education to empower students. Therefore, any traditional ways of
promoting the learning model needed to be redesigned to aggressively target these students
and families. The following are
promotional
and recruitment materials that were created to describe project-based learning
implementing the Big Picture Learning model:
·Brochures kept text to a minimum, used pictures that depict student learning using Los Angeles as their classroom and slogans used to describe the school's educational model, culture, and community. The brochures were created to target parents and translated to Spanish.
·Bookmarks were created and are updated every year to describe new student initiatives and advertise to current 7th and 8th grade students.
·Postcards created are used to highlight student projects to invite prospective students/families.
· The Website was revamped and aims to inform potential families, donors and mentors. The website features an easy to navigate menu and an online application for interested students. Also, the website links to facebooks, twitter, and youtube (coming soon) channel. While creating the website we kept in mind that most of our students parents speak Spanish and the pages are translated in Spanish.
