iPads in Class and More: TIIP Reviews of Applications and Links to Helpful Resources

Today's young people, our potential students, are a part of a fast-growing, never-sleeping technology movement. Teachers must learn to stay on track with current trends, applications, up-to-date devices, and become savy at how to use them as learning devices to increase engagement while giving our students expertise in use of 21st century technology skills.

Classrooms today are becoming more and more accessible on-line from remote locations, incorporating use of student-devices in class, and putting a greater demand on teacher's to be "up-to-date" in our technology devices in classes.

We must become savy at not only having the devices but also learning and developing ways to put them to use in our class and with our students.

A great article to use as a resource linking to dozens of handy articles for educators can be found here, "50 resources for iPad use in classroom: A roundup of educational articles, apps and tutorials for teachers looking to integrate iPads in the classroom." We highly recommend it as this article includes links to other articles discussing such topics as: "Bring your own Device BYOD," top iPad applications for educators, top iPad apps for math teachers, APPLE becoming more and more present in on-line classrooms, and more.

Some iPad Application Reviews:

One iPad application we've started working with is called "Socrative" smart student response system. This application allows teachers to pose questions, give short quizzes, or take surveys with students, similar to the iClickers (but without buying all the extra technology for the iClickers). The Socrative Application allows students to log on from their own technology device or computer and join "the class" to participate using a classroom ID.

There are also some handy note-taking apps available for teachers. We have been working with one that's called just simply called--"Teacher Notes" that lets you add audio, photos, or videos to your notes. Your notes can be taken by period or class and provides functions to "tap to add Kid" and mark comments regarding students in specific domain areas such as language or social/emotional. The first 2 Classes are free, and then you can pay to subscribe to have more classes. There is also a function that allows you to import or export files.
