Building a Classroom Community:Video Introductions
This is an activity that gets students motivated with technology and helps build a classroom community during the first week of class.
Description:
The first week of class is an essential time to build connections with students. We want our students to feel respected and validated in the classroom. We want to build a class community, but we find that most of our students are very shy when all the attention is on them. To begin class in a way that allows them to express who they are and allows us as teachers to see their skills with speech and technology, we use video introductions. In our school, we are lucky to have a cart with about 15 working Mac laptops. We use iMovie to build quick video introductions. But when the Macs are not available, the students use their phones, our personal cameras and iPad to create video introductions.
Objective: Students will be able to create videos to introduce themselves in a non-threatening manner.
Materials: Video recording device one for every 2-3 student groups: camera phones, video cameras, iPads, or webcams, storyboard (optional)
Time: 2 days
Rubric: Video Introductions
