Alaska Learnings and "Posters" of Activities

Garey High School's Road to Alaska - UCLA TIIP team goes to Alaska Math and Science Conference in Fairbanks, Alaska (https://sites.google.com/site/2011akmathsciconference/) and from there explores science and math in the most awe-striking forms. The best way to appreciate these learnings are through the photos and videos presented below in the glogster posters.

The Alaska Math & Science Conference (https://sites.google.com/site/2011akmathsciconference/) was held in Fairbanks from September 24-26, 2011, with a focus on STEM Education, and it included a field trip to nearby geothermal hot springs and a renewable energy tour.

From the conference, using only a remaining 3-day window, we continued rapidly into:

  • our exploration and studies of the Arctic Circle,
  • studying the ecology of the Arctic Tundra and Boreal Forest,
  • ANWR and Pipeline education
  • Northern Lights expedition, (all of the above contained within a single 18-hour expedition with an overly educated teacher guiding us that offered a wealth of information, had us on the edge of our seats to record or document practically every word he said to bring back to our classrooms. You'll see him in the Arctic Circle Poster videos!)
  • overview of glacial land mass with a glacial landing that was broadcasted almost real-time back to our students,
  • ocean tour of historic glaciers and their current status in a global warming climate (last day of learning)

Please review the "glogsters" posters below for more details, images, and short videos. Also, check out the extended "Road to Alaska" video.
