Social Justice Literacy Library Resources
Books that address Anti-bias education, Civil Rights, Immigration, different lenses to explore American History, classism, racism and much more. This booklist is a source for books to build Social Justice in the classroom. These recommended books will encourage children and adults to question, challenge, and re-think the world beyond the headlines. It provides a listing of books we will need to make our very diverse classes welcoming to all our students. These resources fill in what the textbooks leave out so that our students can see themselves and their issues in the curriculum.

Classroom Observation Guide
This guide was designed to help observers and coaches focus their documentatio on different aspects of learning in the classroom. By using guiding questions and recording both what the teacher and students say, we are able to take a snap shot of the teaching and learning within a lesson.
Our Words Have Power Documentation
To develop a classroom community that is empowered to think critically about social justice issues, students began to document our student conversations. By documenting their own thinking and their peers, they were able to understand the importance and power of words.
Thinking about Primary Sources using Social Justice lenses
The use of primary sources is an excellent way to ask students to think critically about a period of history or a social justice issue. We adapted the Thinking about Primary Sources form developed by the Library of Congress to incorporated our Social Justice lenses.
Primary Source Curriculum Plan, 2nd Grade Social Studies
This Primary Source Curriculum plan was to designed to address the 2nd grade California Social Studies standards on "People Who Make a Difference" in a more project based, inquiry driven way. By using primary sources to provoke thinking about Power and Change, the students in our class began to follow their path of inquiry. Some researched Jackie Robinson, while some wanted to know what came before Jackie Robinson. While researching in collaborative groups, some students were led to research other important civil rights leaders like Gandhi or Martin Luther King Jr.
Social Justice Lenses Lesson Plan
This lesson plan describes how we began to introduce the Social Justice lenses we developed through the "Stop and Jot" interactive read-aloud technique.
