This program is offered in partnership with the
UCLA Public History Initiative and the Huntington-USC Institute for California
and the West. The workshop examines the Civil War from a western
perspective. The focus will be on the conflict over how the American
nation would expand, and who, within that expanding nation, might claim
freedom, property, and citizenship. Seminar participants will interact with
noted scholars, engage in pedagogy sessions, and read and dialogue about the
essays in Empire and Liberty: The American West and the Civil War, which
you will receive on the first day of the workshop. Registration includes free
admission to the Huntington Library and the Autry National Center, and parking
at UCLA.
